Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision and can occur in either or both eyes. It cannot spread from one eye to the other. The most common symptoms of a cataract are blurry vision, faded colors, glare, poor night vision and/or double vision. This problem causes a significant amount of vision loss in children.

Diagnosis
In addition to a complete eye examination, diagnostic procedures for cataracts may include completing a visual acuity test – an eye chart which measures vision ability at various distances in each eye and/or dilating the pupil, widening it with eye drops to allow further examination of the physical retina in the eye.

Treatment
Treatment for your child’s cataracts will be determined based on the extent of the disease. The cataract may be treated with eyeglasses or with surgery.
